When making signs using vinyl letters and logos we always use oil based paints as they last longer.
I have had a pair of black vinyl barstools for years and while they weren t terrible they were simply too dark for my basement kitchenette.
Many clear coat paints will remove or tarnish and smear printed decals.
Do not abrade the decal using sandpaper with a grit lower than 220 as this may damage the sticker.
A clear coat or several can add pristine uniform gloss.
Be sure your vinyl is clean before applying paint by washing it with soap and water and rinsing well.
If your vinyl surface is clean the paint or primer will adhere to the vinyl rather than the dirt and you will have a longer lasting finish.
But always test a sample of your clear paint with a sample decal first.
Rim caps or tiny applications or your decals have fine details such as a die cut vinyl decal that might otherwise catch on it s sharp corners.
Please also note most vinyl decal material has an outdoor durability rating based on the angle of which the decal is applied.
Do not prime an unabraded decal or the finish will flake.
Paint will not stick to a dirty surface.

For example a 6 year vinyl material we use mostly oracal 6 year proven commercial grade vinyl is rated at up to 6 years outdoor durable or longer when applied at a 90 degree angle plus or minus 10 degrees.
